Mother's Day Celebration on May 8, 2026

Mother’s Day is about celebrating motherhood - these are the women we loved the most even before we took our first breath, our very nurturers and caregivers. A mother-child relationship is sometimes compared to a thin silk and almost transparent thread, a bond that is sometimes unseen but certainly not unfelt.

I was raised in India, and got to know of this celebration only when I moved to France and then to the US in my mid-twenties, and just loved the idea of it. That being said, I was brought up in a tradition to respect and honor feminine energy with a myriad of Goddesses from the Hindu tradition - these are called “Prakriti” (nature) in Vedantic literature.

Ashtanga Yoga believes in a dualistic nature of God - “Purusha” (masculine energy) and “Prakriti” (feminine energy). There are 25 evolutes of this interplay of the masculine and feminine forces - such as the five elements (earth, water, etc.).

Now, let’s bring our attention back to Prakriti - it is her nature to create and without that energy, all the diverse ideas that are manifest in Purusha will have no outlet! With this in mind, let us honor our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends and all those who have brought about their feminine side to help us enjoy this world better.

Aum shanti shanti shanti

PS: If you are free on Friday, May 8, please book your spot for a fun Mother’s Day celebration from 5-5:45 pm! Check this out on our events calendar.
